Software Recognition Service

In an IT environment with 2 000 computers your inventory tool easily generate more than 20 000 different program files, an number that increases as new programs are installed. Snow Software’s service Software Recognition Service automatically identifies which of these files belong to applications that require licenses and makes it easy for you to see which programs are used in your organization.

Snows offering
Snow Software’s service analyses and identifies all commercial applications in your IT environment. Unidentified applications are automatically sent to Software Recognition Service Desk for analysis. Definitions and rules for software identification are then sent back to all subscribers.

How it works

 
  1. All clients in the network are inventoried by Snow Inventory, Microsoft SMS® or Microsoft SCCM®.
     
  2. Snow License Manager identifies installed applications using definitions and rules.
     
  3. Unidentified applications are automatically sent to Snow’s Software Recognition Service Desk at regular intervals.
     
  4. Software Recognition Service Desk  analyses and identifies the applications.
     
  5. Snow License Manager retrieves updates of the definition file on a daily basis.
 

A challenge to handle inventoried data
Most inventory solutions are delivered with a database that contains definitions to identify software. Because of the ever increasing amount of applications in an IT environment the work to update and maintain the definitions soon becomes both time and resource consuming.

To further complicate the matter software manufacturers often does not use a standard when naming and tagging their software.

In practice this manifests itself in that two versions of the same software can use completely tags or that two exe-files with the same name belongs to two entirely different applications.

 

What is included?

The applications are identified with for example manufacturer, name, version, language, application family (in order to automate up and downgrades) and application type according to the UNSPSC standard.

  • From the time at least half of your computers has reported to the database, Snow’s software identification will be complete within 30 days.
     
  • All commercial applications in your IT environment are identified in accordance to our SLA.
     
  • In addition to commercial application over 3000 commonly used freeware, games, file sharing clients and poker clients are identified.
     
  • From the time at least half of your computers has reported to the database, Snow’s software identification will be complete within 30 days.
     
  • Identification of recently added inventoried applications are handled continuously on a weekly basis at intervals of five work days
     
  • Installations on both Windows and Mac platforms.
     
  • Complete freedom for you to manage specific applications according to your own need, for example custom developed applications.
